July 23, 2007 Comments Off on Bronze!
Back in the days when some newspaper (DH) wrote “L’espoir Belge” about me, we as Belgian swimmers were already happy when we came close to qualifying for a final. Yes, there was a certain bald guy who’d gotten a bronze medal at the European Junior Chamionships on the breaststroke (to continue towards an olympic title). But back then, breaststroke was a Belgian speciality! It was obvious that we would have a breaststroker after Lempereur and Becue.
Last weekend, at the European Junior Chamionships in Antwerpen, I saw 6 Belgians in finals, and I also saw how Glenn Surgeloose got a bronze medal. I missed out on Yoris Grandjean becoming European Champion at 100m freestyle (my speciality 16 years ago at the same championships) because I had to work. Oh how the times have changed. For these boys Bejing might come a little early, but we’ll certainly hear a couple of Belgian names on future World and European swimming events (Heersbrandt, Surgeloose, Lecluyse, Matthysen, Grandjean,…). Cross fingers and hope that these girls and boys are well taken care of by their “entourage”.
