iTunes Genius?

September 17, 2008 Comments Off on iTunes Genius?

After a filesystem corruption, I decided to finally upgrade to Leopard (thanks Tineke anyway for the Gray CD’s for your more recent iMac, little did I know about the stringent checks Apple does on versions!). And at the same time, an upgrade to iTunes 8 happened.

iTunes comes with a new feature (supported in the more recent ipods) called Genius. Genius is basically an algorithm that will look for similar music as the one you selected. One of its presentation forms is the playlist builder. Unfortunately, the algorithm has some shortcomings and sometimes recommends playlists based on the language in which a song is sung. Great… so here’s the similar music to ‘Dieu Fumeur De Havanes’
genius

  • Dieu Fumeur De Havanes,Serge Gainsbourg
  • Harley Davidson,Brigitte Bardot
  • Jackadi,Vanessa Paradis
  • Foule sentimentale,Alain Souchon
  • Rester Femme,Axelle Red
  • La poupée qui fait non,Michel Polnareff
  • Libertine,Mylène Farmer
  • Une belle histoire,Michel Fugain
  • Milord,Edith Piaf
  • La possibilité d’une île,Carla Bruni
  • Flagrant Delire,Vanessa Paradis
  • Un homme et une femme,Francis Lai
  • Les filles du bord de mer,Salvatore Adamo
  • Radio Mix,Axelle Red
  • L’homme À Tête De Chou,Serge Gainsbourg
  • Paroles, paroles,Dalida
  • Le diable est anglais,Brigitte Bardot
  • Il N’y A Pas D’Ailleurs,Mylène Farmer
  • Mademoiselle chante le blues,Patricia Kaas
  • Junior Suite,Vanessa Paradis
  • Moi… Lolita,Alizée
  • Et maintenant,Gilbert Bécaud
  • Aphrodisiaque,Axelle Red
  • For me formidable,Charles Aznavour
  • Sauver le monde,Zazie

To me there’s a lot in there that I would not qualify as ‘close to Gainsbourg’. Have you had any weird Genius playlist? A bit like Metallica showing up next to LL Cool J because they both sing in English or something? 😉

What would have been awesome and Genius… selecting Moi… Lolita and getting Viva La Vida in your resulting playlist…
