A week in Oz

October 31, 2010 Comments Off on A week in Oz

Almost cannot believe a week has gone past since we left home! Though we left on Saturday evening, we didn’t get to Port Douglas until Monday morning. 29C and sunshine for the rest of the week! How’s that for a change after a dreadful summer in Belgium!
Despite the abundance of sleep on the long flights, 7hr on the way to Singapore and 4hr to Sidney, we did slightly suffer from jet lag. Waking up at five and fighting to stay awake in the evening. Not good! That one evening in the bar with the American honeymooners sure didn’t help us there 🙂
Our intention for this first week was to relax, but we ended up seeing loads of corals, fish, trees (rain forest), spiders (a hairy big one in our room!), marsupials and even a Cassowary! Karen’s knee is OK, but not great either. Thala Beach Lodge, where we stayed, had lots of bungalows which we could only reach via steep hills. Nevertheless it was totally worth it! Overviewing the ocean from the canopy of a little piece of rainforest is priceless !
On our trip to the outer reef, which we did on the Calypso, the divers took special care of Karen, who doesn’t like the idea of being alone in sea, so that she too could enjoy the colourful fish and corals! If there’s one thing I can say about the reef, it’s something everyone should see and learn about. The delicate nature of that marvellous piece of world wonder, and the interesting stories about how every creature in the reef has it’s role to play, is never to be forgotten!
As we say: tick in the box, on to a new adventure: Australia’s outback, Uluru!
